Moments of Genius™ - Gel Heel Pad Edition

take a look at these. I’m thrilled. and not for the reasons you think.

yah. not for my feet. that would be too obvious.

i love my new uglybros kevlar jeans. they are soft, easy to get on and off, and the knee pads being removable make my day so much easier when going in and out of clients homes.

the one downside is that on rides longer then 30 minutes, the knee pads start hurting my knees to the point of tingling. i think maybe hitting a nerve? i guess its because there isn’t much in-between the pad and my knee. I’ve been thinking that maybe i could get some foam pads and glue them in to relieve the pain. but .. no.. a moment of genius™ with my wife at wall greens tonight. lets hope this does the trick.

one size fits all.. indeed.

New Summer Jacket - Dainese Air Flux

i sold me rev’it levante. it was a great jacket, but was a bit big on me. i also realized that i want something a lot more light weight for manhattan commuting. after a bunch of research i was interested in the dainese air flux. i really wanted to see it in person, and after a bunch of calling around, Gold Coast BMW in Long Island had them in stock. I went there after work, they had my size in both black, and light grey. i tried them both on and went for the light grey / anthracite. click on for more photos and thoughts. image

i kept reading about how this jacket felt like wearing a t-shirt. its mostly true. its very light weight, and lets a ton of air in. i was nervous about the colors from what i saw in the photos online. the “grey / anthracite” looked much more like a white jacket. the black really looked good online but i was nervous about the added heat while sitting at red lights in the city.

in person, the grey / anthracite is not white at all. its a light grey / silver. the black looked great, but i really liked the light grey. it fit well, i was excited.

i spoke to tom in the parts department. he asked me if i wanted the back protector. i read online that it was an expensive add on at $89. he told me that .. funny enough, the ducatti branded version of the same part actually went for $69. he also was kind enough to discount them 10% when i bought them together. cool dude. thanks tom! so.. key take away there, get the ducatti back protector if you need.

its not yet 90+ degrees so i can’t tell you how much it breathes, but i can already tell you its much more light weight and less obtrusive then the levante was, while having the same amount of mesh paneling.

Researching new summer jacket

Sold my rev’it levante. It didn’t fit me right. Mainly because when I was originally trying it on - I tested the fit with the thermal liner in thinking I was going to use this jacket in to the winter.
Since I have dedicated winter jackets I only really use the levante in the heat. The fit is too big for me and it bothered me so I sold it on ebay for around $175.
I’m currently researching a new jacket. Budget around $200.
Either another rev’it that fits me correctly without liner in - or the dainese air flux. Most reviews of the air flux mention how it feels like a tshirt. Sounds good to me as riding / commuting in NYC humid summer weather is tough. The more light weight and breathable the better. I just need to make sure it has enough protection.
While researching I realized no one lists jacket weights. That’s annoying. Seems like a good metric to help decide.
I’m going to head to motochanic in west New York (nj) tomorrow after work to try some on.

Ugly Bros Shovel-K Kevlar Jeans with Armor

I found these while searching the interwebs for a good pair of summer pants. I was first toying with getting over pants from rev’it, similar to my winter pants, but with large mesh panels. This would mean i would need two layers in the summer which is not really appealing, and they would be white, which would be more obvious then my black winter over pants. I really refuse to ride without armor and protection. I know that a spill is inevitable and i want to give my body its best chance. I researched jeans from rev’it, but the reviews weren’t great. specifically regarding where the knee pads position against the riders knees.

So, again, i found these Shovel-K jeans, after weeks of random searching. What turned me on about it was that i could remove the knee pads without taking my pants off. This appeals to me because of how many stops i make on an average work day. I imagined riding to a client, parking my bike, quickly removing my knee pads and storing them in the side case. Going up to my client in somewhat normal looking jeans. I would look more normal then i do in the winter with my black over pants. Read on for close up photos and my thoughts…

They are a bit high priced, but compared to other solutions out there, they are actually an average price. The rev’it jeans were priced a bit lower, but pants from Aether a couple hundred more.

I searched for local retailers in north america. they had two, one in texas, and one in brooklyn. I went to jane motorcycles in willamsburg brooklyn to try on a pair. they didn’t have the kevlar jeans, but they had similar mens pants that i could try on. I tried on a pair, and actually liked the look of the dark green pants they had. They fit great, and getting the knee pads in and out was really easy to do. I would have bought that pair then, but the lack of kevlar or some other material to keep the pants from shredding on a fall scared me. I had them order me the jeans, which they do not normally stock. It came in a couple days ago, and i went to pick them up yesterday.

I was nervous about picking them up, as if they didn’t fit well, or i hated them, it would be a pain to return. I got lucky, they fit and feel perfect. I love the way they look (considering what they are). The kevlar lining makes the pant feel a little thicker which might get a little warm in the summer, but i think they are still my best option. better then two layers of pants, or jeans with mis-located knee pads.

I took them for a ride friday and they felt great. they didn’t hold my balls hostage, they didn’t feel too thin. I felt confident wearing them. The knee pads felt good. I’m excited to use them for most of this coming summer.

A few more photos… the yellow liner is the kevlar liner.

Hi, I also own a 2012 G 650 GS and ride in the city. How are you doing with gas mileage? I usually get 100 miles before the reserve lights comes on? Also have you thought of changing the stock seat? The OEM is a real pain in the ass and I ordered and Airhawk but hate the way it looks and sending it back. Happy riding

I’m pretty sure this is the Martin I know with the red GS. sorry for the late reply.
I get around 120 miles in city driving before my reserve light comes on.
I can usually get another 40 miles out of it - but I tend to fill up after about 20.
I’ve gotten over 200 miles on a tank before - on a longer distance trip with mostly highway but some city.

The stock seat for me is fine for commuting but terrible for more then 2 hours of riding out. I’m thinking I’ll keep the seat original but on my next bike (F800GS?) I’ll go for the comfort seat option from BMW - if it fits me. Might be too high.

Happy riding!

"steelyelk said: Are you upgrading to something bigger? I thought I saw your bike for sale on Craigslist."

I have no idea how to reply to things on tumblr so I’m just making another post.

Good question.
I love my current bike. I would eventually like to get something bigger like an F800GS or similar. So I occasionally throw my bike up for sale to see if there are any bites.

I’m completely happy to keep riding this bike for a long time though.
